Not every host accepts PostgreSQL, and it would be great to use mongodb/mariadb.

I just started reading the code (so I'm sure I'm missing a lot of parts) and I saw this issues to be solved to migrate to a db-agnostic design:

Migrate from postgres' accent extension (see issue Move PostgreSQL "unaccented" extension to IconV #18 )
Reimplement the tree search algorithm (maybe use elasticsearch! 😉). Currently, crowdata is using pg-trgm
