When using HotCat, for example, entering the former will resolve to the latter. In fact, if you use HotCat to edit the category via the web interface and save it as is, it will resolve to the correct category.
How do you know that this problem exists today? Why is this important?
I've uploaded pictures that had unexpectedly invalid categories that I had to then resolve. This can leave uploads in a silently not quite correct state, harder to find than they should be.
Who will benefit from it?
Anyone who doesn't have the proper names of the categories they're looking for memorized.
