The City of Sunnyvale maintains a parcel layer that indicates the year in which the primary structure on the parcel was built. This dataset could be joined to the building layer to yield a layer of buildings with start_dates, suitable for inclusion in OpenHistoricalMap. These datasets are both in the public domain as works of a California government agency.

The parcel layer only accounts for the most recent building, so this approach wouldn’t bring in any buildings that have been replaced. As a result, if you scrub the time slider back far enough, there will be holes in an otherwise densely populated neighborhood. Nevertheless, this would be a great starting point for further research.
