Quite a few of the issues seem to rotate around https://github.com/boltgolt/howdy/wiki/Common-issues#error-when-trying-to-add-a-face-model

Would there be a "definitive way" to make the application fail, but in a manner that would "explain" the need to configure a camera?

A stacktrace in my eyes more-or-less calls for a bug report.
From your eyes, it is an "expected" issue.
