I don't know whether AC uses its own protocol for chat or IRC.

I suggest to use XMPP, for two main reasons:

Having the community centered in free servers under our control.
Letting people who dedicate AC Servers an easier and flexible way to address to the users, to

set new moderators; or
receive immediate updates from them; or
get screenshots and videos (there's an HTTP Upload mechanism in XMPP which makes it even simpler to share media contents, including audio, images and video).

Same, for users who are offline but want to get updates from firends, or just chat.

All, by using an XMPP app from their mobile device or desktop).
