I find very annoyingly that I keep loosing because I want to get the snake to move say up and then to the left really quickly, but I find that because I am pressing the arrow keys so quickly that often nothing happens at all. It probably thinks that they are both being pressed at the same time or something though in reality it's more like I'm releasing one and then pressing the other.
In most other snake games I have found this to work so it definitely can be done.
I am running Ubuntu GNOME 16.10 with GNOME 3.22 and nSnake version 3.0.1-2build1.
