Dropdown menus are laggy when accessed via screen reader

What is happening?

Our admin who uses the JAWS screen reader reports that dropdown menus on the course page such as the ones for choosing a Wikipedia expert or adding a campaign, from the course approval (among others). After clicking the dropdown, the screen reader takes about a second before it reads out the options.

Additional context

These dropdowns feel instantaneous when used visually, so I'm stumped as to why there is lag for the screen reader specifically on these menus.
