Better storage solution for reference files

The reference files are massive (955 MB at time of writing) and are completly modified with every PR (other than some small text files). This means the history is 10s GB and growing. This is not the way to use git!

We need another solution. Will ask HK computing group about the feasibility of using nextcloud, or similar
