launching OpenShot by (double) click on previously saved project does not load project settings
found on windows 10, Openshot 3.1.1

Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. browse to a previously saved project
  2. double click on project icon

Expected behavior:
OpenShot lanches and loads project, I can see my previously saved work

Acutal behavior:
Openshot is launched but the project is empty

System Details:

  • OpenShot Version 3.1.1
  • Operating System / Distro: Windows 10 64bit

Hello @bartro.

  1. Does this happen with only one project or multiple projects?
  2. Are you getting any error messages when your project opens or just an empty project? If you are getting and type of messages then please tell us what message(s) you are seeing.
  3. If you first start OpenShot and then open your project, does your project load correctly?
  4. Is this the first time you are using Openshot v3.1.1 or did you upgrade from a previous version? If upgraded, what version were you using previously?

Please answer each question so we can better troubleshoot your issue?

Hello @Colorjet3

  1. I think I found the cause. The project has some latin extended characters in one word of the name such as (unicode) U+020B , U+0219, U+01CE. If I change the name to contain only ASCII range characters, it opens fine.
  2. Just an empty project, no error messages. Even the application window shows 'Untitled Project' in the upper left corner.
  3. Yes, open Openshot and then file -> Open Project works fine. That is our current workaround.
  4. It's a fresh, first time install.

Hi @Colorjet3 ,

I am not sure why this ticket should be closed. Can you explain your decision?
To give some context, OpenShot is used for a school project and multiple students have no clue why their projects show up empty when they try to open them. This resulted in them repetitive remaking the project from scratch which is frustrating for them, and it it's not because of a mistake they made.

Thank you.

Hello @bartro. I believe I closed it prematurely. If opening the file via File | "Open Project..." works, I assume double clicking the projectname.osp file should work as well.

Please provide me the following:

  1. What operating system/version are your students running (Windows 10 Pro? Ubunut 23.10? etc?)
  2. Which Latin extended characters in the project file name are you using? If you give me some examples of your project names I can try and replicate your issue. This will help the lead developer as well to further troubleshoot.

Update: It would be beneficial if you provide the actual steps you are taking to create those Latin characters.

Thank you in advance!

Hello @bartro. I was able to replicate this issue in my Windows 11 Pro environment and using OpenShot v3.1.1 (the latest DEV Daily build).

Interesting find is that if I don't use any special character(s) in the file name, but use special character(s) in the Folder name the problem persists as well.

I will assign this to the lead developer for his review and see if it is something he wants to address.
