First Time User troubles 😅 Waiting for komorebi.exe to start...komorebi.exe did not start... Trying again

I installed using winget, so did:

winget install LGUG2Z.whkd
winget install LGUG2Z.komorebi

Then I set an environment variable $env:KOMOREBI_CONFIG_HOME (~\komorebi\), and then put the komorebi.json and applications.yaml inside that folder. I also put the whkrdc file there, although I left a copy in ~\.config, just in case.

Following the walkthrough, I then ran: komorebic start -c ~\komorebi\komorebi.json --whkd, which results in:

Searching precisely for "Waiting for komorebi.exe to start...komorebi.exe did not start" in Google and GitHub Issues, or Discussion did not give me any hits...so not sure what next steps should be.

Hi! I have seen the same issue when having komorebi.json with errors. Check that your configuration is correct.

To get more information about the exact error that is stopping komorebi from starting, you can call the binary directly with komorebi --config $Env:USERPROFILE\komorebi\komorebi.json

Hi, I have run that and received an error: The system cannot find the file specified. (os error 2).

I've followed the quickstart instructions, then moved komorebi.json into ~/.config/komorebi, then ran komorebi --config $Env:USERPROFILE\.config\komorebi\komorebi.json. I've triple checked that the file is indeed there.

Does your username contain spaces by any chance? If it does, you can try wrapping the argument to --config with double quotes

I had the same error, when my application.yaml was wrong.
You can run komorebi -c "$Env:USERPROFILE\komorebi\komorebi.json" it will say you where the error is.

If your config here: C:\Users\YOUR_USER\.config\komorebi

In komorebi.json remove space in patch:
before:
"app_specific_configuration_path": "$Env:KOMOREBI_CONFIG_HOME /applications.yaml",
after:
"app_specific_configuration_path": "$Env:KOMOREBI_CONFIG_HOME/applications.yaml",

Then start:
komorebi -c $Env:USERPROFILE.config\komorebi\komorebi.json

I figured it out, you need to run:

komorebic quickstart

This command will create default configuration file, which you need to replace with your own. Then you will be able to run

komorebic start --whkd

which will read your configuration file from user directory (or specify --config parameter)

I have no idea why it works this way, but for some reason the only way to read this configuration file is to run quickstart first, otherwise it will error

quickstart is the command that creates the sample config files for the first time on a new user's system :)
