limit intermediate hard drive usage by sectioning very large maps #46

allow some kind of space usage limit before compression by sectioning one map as if it were multiple maps. This would take more time but allow for less disk usage while working.

Related to this, what if you have plenty of memory and would rather have the intermediate data not go to disk at all?
