hbox breaks latex strings in Interact #378

I have a simple test case:

md"Works perfectly:" |> display
checkboxes(["a", "b", "c \$\\sqrt{a}\$"]) |> display

md"Works perfectly:" |> display
vbox(pad(1em, "Hi!"),pad(1em, checkboxes(["a", "b", "c \$a=\\sqrt{b}\$"]))) |> display

md"Works perfectly:" |> display
hbox(pad(1em, "Hi!"),pad(1em, checkboxes(["a", "b", "c \$a=\\sqrt{b}\$"]))) |> display

hbox breaks latex strings in Interact! Can I help debugging this? Please tell me how!
