Add tests for new categorical kernel

Please add some tests to the new categorical kernel (#2055)

Motivation

There are tests for the new kernel - it has complete coverage - but they only test the helper functions and broadcasting over the kernel. A test that the kernel itself does what it's supposed to do is currently missing.
