I was planning to use DisableMonitor to set the resolution of my 4k monitor to 1080p (to get 60hz). It might be good to mention that i'm running a GTX 1070 on 10.13. After setting the resolution, the monitor went black, with the backlight still on. I was able to re-enable the monitor by plugging in the TV from my living room, but as you might imagine, this is far from ideal. Even after changing the settings for the monitor back to normal, it goes black as soon as I unplug the TV. Disabling the TV while plugged in fails to disable the TV, and the monitor is still black.

Restarting the computer does nothing. Is there something i'm missing? Is there some config file, or change in the system that can be undone?

I think a timer might be useful, something to restore default settings after a certain amount of time.

Managed to get the display working using the hdmi interface on the monitor instead. The displayport, however, still has issues.
