[1.7.10] Chisel 2 causing IC² machines to be invisible

I have Chisel 2 (version 2.9.5.11) and IndustrialCraft2 (version 2-2.2.823-experimental). Without Chisel 2 IndustrialCraft machines show fine. However, with Chisel 2, IndustrialCraft machines do not have a texture and are see-through (i.e. I can see the void though them). I am using Forge 1558.
I have also tried including the API file in /mods/ but with this the game just crashes on initiation.
My friend with the same mods as I also experiences this issue, therefore this is probably not a problem with my computer.
Googling reveals that there was a problem with Optifine in this version of Minecraft but I do not use Optifine.
