Plenty has been said here and here.

It's pretty clear at this point that the repo served its purpose.

Please archive it and prevent newcomers from mistakenly developing off of old code.

There is an issue in this repository called Is this project dead? with some discussion about this project been not maintained anymore. Some people of the community prompted to maintain this project back there on 2020 but it is obvious now that, despite of the fact that it seems to be some interest from the community about this project (people still open issues and PR here and there), no one is maintaining it anymore.

That said, I don't know if Underscores will be archived or not and I've made a fork of this project for my personal use. Since Underscores project seems to be really not maintained anymore, I'm opening my fork for the community to use and contribute. I don't really intend to spend too much time with it but I will try to, at least, maintain it up to date and working.

My initial intention was to contribute to _s project and not to maintain a fork but I have no answers from no one from the Autommattic members or from regular contributors of this repository on the issues I've tried to interact to (#1384, #1509, #1511, #1506, #1499).

Esqueleto - a fork from _s (Underscores)

Esqueleto is a fork from _s (Underscores) that I've made for my own personal use and here is the call I make for every one who feels it may be of some use too with some explanation on why the fork was made.

Feel free to join us if you feel like so. ;)

I'll say that I think _s still has a role to play as the base for a best-in-class hybrid theme that embraces blocks but not the entirety of the Site Editor (formerly, FSE).

That said, if this project really is abandoned and won't be updated, it should either be archived or open to a new team of contributors. I know many of us would file issues and submit PRs if we still thought there was a possibility of them getting reviewed and accepted.
