The vast majority of ROMs are somewhere in the gray area in terms of redistributability. I think in most cases this is not an issue at all as it is expected that a user can acquire ROMs separately from acquiring 86Box through various means. However, for Linux distributions, it does have the slight downside that 86Box is not usable out-of-the-box, even though "free" ROMs do in fact exist, like of course the awesome skiselev/8088_bios project.
With that, I am proposing the following:
A "free" ROMs repository that includes only open source ROM images.
I know 86Box already checks multiple locations for ROM files. If possible, it would be nice if it could also handle reading from more than one location at a time, so that the system could contain the "free" ROM set and the user could add their own ROM set elsewhere (e.g. in their home folder.) If it already works this way please ignore this one.
I am not asking for anything to be done on my behalf, I am proposing this mainly to see if there is any interest in this. I think it could yield an improvement for 86Box packages on Linux.
