error when creating remote repo on push from Git

I initialise, add and commit a local repo on Git, however when trying to push it shows an error remote repository not found. My understanding is that the 'push origin branch-name' command should create a remote repo and push the local one into it?

The only way around seems to create an empty remote repository of the same name on Github and then I am able to push from Git. This is a personal project so no writing permission issues should be involved.
