The INCF online training suite: a resource to advance and enable training and education in brain data science

Abstract

With the deluge of neuroscience data from new high throughput methods and public resources, there is widespread recognition that data science is becoming an important component of neuroscience training. However, many neuroscientists struggle to receive the needed training in statistics, computing and standards and best practices that comprise the field of neuroinformatics, or brain data science. The International Neuroinformatics Coordinating Facility (INCF) is a standards and best practices organization for FAIR neuroscience. Among its other objectives, the organization aims to enable and advance training and education in brain data science. Given its international purview and distribution of its members and stakeholders, online training resources are particularly useful venues for providing the basis for this aim. To achieve these aims, INCF has developed a suite of openly available online tools: TrainingSpace contains training materials, used in tandem with KnowledgeSpace, a lexicon of neuroscience terminology, and Neurostars, a question and answer forum. Here, we describe these resources -- their scope, integration and use by the global neuroscience community.
