During community testnets, some Windows users have experienced the safe.exe and safenode.exe binaries being flagged by the integrated Windows Defender software. We should take steps mitigate this.

  • Update the boilerplate testnet instructions to specify how to add exceptions to Windows Defender
  • Obtain a code-signing certificate
  • Extend the release process to sign Windows binaries with the code-signing certificate
  • Submit binaries to Microsoft for whitelisting
  • Investigate the use of VirusTotal in the CI process
  • Consider submitting to other anti-virus vendors for whitelisting
  • Provider users with guidance on submitting false positives to anti-virus vendors
