Podcasts, a Mac Catalyst app, does not support the mini player that Music (and iTunes) supported because iOS does not have a comparable mini player. iOS does have something similar — playing background audio through a player on the lock screen. This is also present in macOS as the Now Playing widget in Notification Center. I suggest that as a way to implement a mini player in Podcasts (and other Mac Catalyst apps) a mini window similar to the iOS lock screen player and macOS Now Playing widget floats on the desktop, with a close button to return to the full window.
